MAN’S LACK OF CONTROL OVER HIS ENVIRONMENT

Bodily Ecology as Planetary Metaphor: Decoding a Performative Self-Portrait

In this iconic 2010 performance, the artist transcends the mere self-portrait to embody an existential cartography of environmental disasters. The body, coated in clay and edible materials, becomes the site of a dialectic between destruction and regeneration, where the epidermis transforms into a contaminated ecosystem. This cyclical work (looped for 3 minutes) appropriates the aesthetics of catastrophe to interrogate our dysfunctional relationship with the living world.

Initially recognized in digital art, the artist here returns to the body as a surface for inscribing Anthropocene-era violence. The performance stages a drama of collapse, where bodily oxidation precedes a generative explosion—suggesting that rebirth paradoxically emerges from ecological chaos. This radical proposition confronts the viewer with their own environmental vulnerability while exploring possibilities of resilience in the face of the Anthropocene.
