FAMILY GHOSTS invokes contemporary art as a space for genealogical excavation: where collective history has fragmented, erased, or buried intimate narratives, the work brings their traces back to the surface.
Through DNA testing — a scientific tool displaced into the aesthetic field — the work maps the invisible ramifications connecting the body, family lineages, and the memories of populations shaped by migration, displacement, and the post–de–colonial legacies of the Americas.
Photographic archives, genetic data, digital photomontage, and artificial intelligence form the interwoven strata of a single investigation. Photography carries the trace; DNA reveals unexpected lineages and geographies; photomontage brings together faces, periods, and fragments of history; AI extends the exploration and relational reading of these materials, opening new visual and narrative hypotheses.
The work inhabits the space between trace and hypothesis, document and memory, data and imagination. Photomontage and AI become instruments of connection and projection, bringing forth correspondences, possible lineages, and narratives from the fragments preserved within the archive.
Identity thus emerges as a stratified construction: a biological, familial, cultural, and historical palimpsest, through which lineages, discontinuities, migrations, and the silences of History rise to the surface. The image becomes a site where these different temporalities can encounter one another again.
An odyssey of genes that turns the intimate into an archive of the world, asking what histories our bodies continue to carry when images and narratives have ceased to transmit them.
FANTÔMES FAMILIAUX convoque l’art contemporain comme espace de fouille généalogique : là où l’histoire collective a fragmenté, effacé ou enseveli certains récits intimes, l’œuvre en fait émerger les traces.
À travers le test ADN — outil scientifique déplacé dans le champ esthétique —, elle cartographie les ramifications invisibles qui relient le corps, les lignées familiales et la mémoire de populations traversées par les migrations, les déplacements et les héritages post—dé—coloniaux des Amériques.
Archives photographiques, données génétiques, photomontage numérique et intelligence artificielle constituent les différentes strates d’une même enquête. La photographie porte la trace ; l’ADN révèle des filiations et des géographies insoupçonnées ; le photomontage rapproche des visages, des époques et des fragments d’histoire ; l’IA accompagne l’exploration et la mise en relation de ces données pour ouvrir de nouvelles hypothèses visuelles et narratives.
L’œuvre investit ainsi l’espace entre trace et hypothèse, document et mémoire, donnée et imaginaire. Le photomontage et l’IA deviennent des instruments de mise en relation et de projection, faisant émerger des correspondances, des filiations possibles et des récits à partir des fragments laissés par l’archive.
L’identité apparaît alors comme une construction stratifiée : un palimpseste biologique, familial, culturel et historique, où affleurent filiations, discontinuités, migrations et silences de l’Histoire. L’image devient le lieu où ces différentes temporalités peuvent à nouveau se rencontrer.
Une odyssée des gènes qui fait de l’intime une archive du monde et interroge ce que nos corps continuent de porter d’histoires que les images et les récits ont parfois cessé de transmettre.
